Hey, go with the flow and relax. I had a job once in a dysfunctional organization where I desperately needed the cooperation of a malcontent shipping clerk. After several run arounds, in desperation I went to his boss, but even that was a waste of time (the guy must have had pictures of higher ups w/ animals). Then the malcontent explained the rules to me: he had a fondness for single malt scotch but lacked the means for that luxury. He said those who pleased him at Christmas time are in his gratitude and know it throughout the year. Christmas came early that year; the next day he had a bottle of Laphroaig from me. The cooperation those annual bribes bought me were worth much more than the booze. The guy was so open about selling his good graces that a few years and scotch bottles later, he came to me in November and said he greatly appreciated my past generosity, but his tastes had changed and that for the coming Christmas a cognac in a similar price range would be greatly appreciated! We do what we have to do in life.

If you’re giving away the coupons as a means to bring up a conversation about the Church, you’re probably going to be sending out mixed messages. But if you do it a a gesture of friendliness, I see no problem with it.

As to the WofW, I see it as a counsel (or presently a commandment) that’s tied to the times it was given and the people it’s addressed to. After all, Jesus not only drank wine, he made it, so it’s hard to see that there’s anything inherently wrong with its moderate consumption.

I’ve read a couple of articles in the BYUI student newspaper concerning members who grow hops that they sell to Budweiser and whether that was “kosher” or not. I don’t know if I personally would want to do such things but I don’t think I would judge others on such issues. Go by your conscious, that’s what it’s their for, isn’t it?

Before my mission I worked for my dad in commercial construction. The contractor we working working for wanted to celebrate the addition of the roof on the apartment building we were constructing. They took us to a bar across the alley and we all got one drink voucher.

My dad and I sold ours for a buck each.

Maybe you could sell your book.

Is the WoW (section 89) a commandment to those that are not members of the Church? Is the current interpretation of the WoW a commandment to non-members?

I have given away Starbucks gift certificates to people that would use them and haven’t felt bad about it. Of course I have also hauled the alcohol for the dorm ski trip in my truck without feeling bad about it.

I used to use those coupons to try to get someone out of a seat I wanted. I would offer the coupon book to someone that might let me have their aisle or window seat, etc.

I’ve always wanted to use the drink coupons as an apology for having to sit next to our kids.

The risk in using it on a flight to SLC is that 64.2% of the plane probably wouldn’t be interested in your offer.

I don’t know about using it as a way to talk about the church, but I would definitely give him the book. I’ve always felt that responsible drinking doesn’t make you a bad person. It only makes you a bad Mormon.
