I should qualify my comment by pointing out that it wasn't just the post that sent this person packing. Rather, to this person, the post reflected an increasing environment in the Bloggernacle as a whole. This post was the proverbial straw.

Ned, you're being way too modest in your estimate.

Kim,
You'll have to provide more details. The person quit the bloggernacle because the original post? Or because of the ensuing comments defending it? Or that it wasn't deleted earlier? What about the post caused this person to quit? And was this a part of the reason or what everything going swimmingly in the bloggernacle and all the sudden s/he reads this post and decides to give it all up?

I'm sincerely curious. And if you could send me the person's email (in a private email) I would appreciate it. I don't want a post from my blog to be the reason someone quits reading so I'd like to try to rectify the situation.

I know of at least one person who has quit the bloggernacle because of the androgynous nature of Kim's first name. I'm not saying that's good or bad.

FWIW, I know of one other Bloggernacle member who quit the Bloggernacle because of the Monsters thread. I'm not saying whether the thread was good or bad; just stating an observation.

Rusty,

I think you did the right thing here. But just for the record, and to be fair, you should know that the ban DKL "mini-series" over at BoH was not created solely by DKL, nor was the purpose to get people to defend him and or express hatred of him.

It was a collaborative effort from inception to execution and its purpose was nothing more complicated than engaging readers, and perhaps to a lesser degree holding a mirror up to the volatile issues surrounding banning commenters and deleting comments.

Whether the soap opera that leads to a comments policy is fake, as was ours, or real as was yours, the sad fact is that such policies are a difficult, but necessary part of blogging. If we had any point to make that was it.

That whole thread was great for me. It reminded me of the wonderful ongoing fights in the letters to the editor section of the BYU-Idaho school newspaper.
Ah memories in the corners of my mind!
