Wonderful post. I too believe in the transformative power of the atonement, and love the Book of Mormon with all my heart. Thanks for this.

[...] About a week ago, you may have read an article in the New York Times by David Brooks regarding the message espoused by Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Book of Mormon Musical. And if you read that, you may have read Andrew Sullivan’s article pushing back against Brooks or Joanna Brooks’s rather different disagreement. Maybe you got wind of the entire thing at BCC from John C’s article that posited that both Brooks and Sullivan fail because they argue along a false dichotomy. Maybe you saw MCQ’s article at 9 Moons that referenced nearly all of the above. [...]

The Atonement is universal, so yes, I'm sure it is, but I'm not in a position to discuss Islam because I just don't know that much about it.

If I had to guess, however, I would say that there is transformative power whenever the Spirit of God is involved, and the Spirit is involved whenever there is any degree of goodness or truth.

Not to be contrary, because this was a great post, but is there "transformative power" in non-Christian religions? In other words, can Islam transform a person's heart?

I speak as someone who has studied Islam somewhat in-depth, and heard very moving testimonies of people who have made the Hajj, and it's hard not to consider them transformative experiences. Do you think the Atonement is somehow at work in these instances?
