Don – you’re right – Simon is usually spot on in his judgements, and we British do like to call a spade a spade. He can be a little mean at times, but isn’t that part of the reason people watch AI? And Annegb – I’m there with you – we tivo it!

I wish the show would screen out the people who are clearly mentally ill, delayed and/or high on something, instead of making them the butt of jokes. Painful to watch.

While I don’t morally object to Simon (you’re asking for it if you go on the show), I would object to behavior like that IRL. It’s not kind. And isn’t that what we are supposed to be?

Don,

I think you miss the beef that many Americans have with Simon. You lived in the UK and understand how blunt the Limeys are. What you’ve neglected, English language aside, is that most American culture, customs, temperament, etc, is Dutch based, not British. Most Americans see this guy as an aberration or that this is just some shtick for the show. They are utterly clueless that Simon is a typical Limey.

I’m convinced that a lot of the really terrible people trying out for the show are only trying to get on tv so they make themselves sound worse than they really are. I don’t feel bad when Simon rips on them.

I have seen Simon be very nice to people who are clearly mentally ill. It just doesn’t bother me because the people trying out know what they are getting themselves into.

I think Simon’s rationale for his brashness (which I think is sound but could be up for debate as well) is to help people get rid of their delusions when they really do sound horrible. Some people just won’t quit unless you give them a harsh, honest approach.
If you watch closely, he’s actually quite nice to those who are good and/or ok, but not good enough or right for their competition.

Yeah, I’m with annegb on this one. Simon is immensely entertaining to me, mostly because he’s brash, obtuse, and direct. I find it refreshing in a world where most people wouldn’t talk like that. Paula and Randy actually balance Simon out quite well. Most of those people should know what they’re going to get when they walk in there. I mean, they’re looking for pop artists. It’s a specific genre that a lot of the people who are kicked off don’t realize. Pop is half looks half talent. If the contestant doesn’t have both, success will be tough to come by. Oh, and I predict that young black girl, Paris, will win the whole thing. She’s GREAT.

I agree, if someone came before me trying out for a job that they were obviously not qualified for, I probably would act the same way. When was the last time you went for a job interview and the interviewer told you that you were a hack etc. even if you weren’t that qualified. Granted, these people are delusional, but tact would be nice. Hence the reason I don’t watch the show.

It’s pretty hard for me to understand the denial in a 300 lb. young woman with braces and no talent. I just don’t see how those people think they’re talented.

I believe in honesty. I wouldn’t be cruel to that girl, but I would take her aside and be honest and kind and make suggestions. I don’t know what’s wrong with people who set themselves up like that. I don’t think Simon’s crazy. I think they are.
