Perhaps they were "wicked", but isn't it often by the wicked that the wicked are punished? It was prophesied, but "it had to happen"? I don't think so. If people were loving and kind, truly saw other people as their brothers and sisters... yes, it doesn't usually happen that way, but the attitude that wholesale destruction is inevitable makes it seem like we shouldn't even try to avoid horrible things like this.
