Comments on: Amen!

During a talk a few weeks ago, the speaker read an extensive quote from a General Authority. As she was reading the quote I had to corral the kids and stopped paying attention when I heard, “In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.” I added a hearty “Amen” of my own and immediately went bright red when the people around us started laughing because her quote had ended. Not her talk. I still give a loud Amen whenever I’m paying attention.

My ward in Washington, DC, which I’ve only been in for about 3 months, has loud “amens” (I’ll confess that mine fit into the mumble category, though). Of more interest, however, is that when the speaker or testimony-bearer says, “Good morning,” the congregation answers “good morning” back. It’s a friendly ward :-)

Full disclosure: I say amen with the same fervor I belt out the hymns.

But do you know what bugs me more than a whispered amen between a faithful member and their god? Any attempt to animate a dozing congregation with “aloha.”

My wife gives me a funny look if my “amen” is much more enthusiastic than that of others (“so loud”), which happens every now and then.

There was a counselor (IIRC) in the São Paulo MTC presidency in 1999 who not only agreed with prayers and talks vociferously, he made a big deal out of it from the pulpit, saying that all of us should be similarly emphatic in our AMENS!

I admit my volume varies depending on my moods.

Sometimes I’m loud, sometimes subdued.

But you will hear a loud sigh on Wednesday morning, I promise you that. ;)

It drives my wife crazy because, amisdt the mumbling “amens” I always give a clear, emphatic one that draws looks.

Maybe it’s because I was a North Carolina missionary, too.

As for the politicking, our HPGL actually stood up in testimony meeting and proselytized Prop 8. Jesus was only mentioned when he closed with “In the name of…” The Mrs. and I remained stoic, but squeezed each other’s hand frantically.
