Modesty, who cares?

Don - May 21, 2005

It never ceases to amaze me at the change in modesty standards over the years.

Years ago, far before my day, it was immodest for a woman to show her ankle. Men and women wore long sleeves and skirt/dress/pants to the ground. As hemlines went up and short sleeves became popular the standard changed.

The church accommadated the changes by shortening the garment, from ankle length to above the knee, from wrist length to short sleeves. (and thank goodness they made them more comfortable by making them 2 piece)

Modesty issues have influenced the endowment process at the veil and now the initiatories. As the world becomes more immodest, we are more careful about the issue.

I know it’s more than just a modesty issue, but how far will this continue? How many more changes will take place within the church because of the culture outside the church?

  1. Don,

I don’t think the process has been quite as unidirectional as you seem to be implying. Society has gone through various stages at which different portions of the body have been considered taboo to show. For example, there have been repeated cycles during which it has been completely acceptable to show a woman’s breast in public. (For one article discussing this, see http://dsc.discovery.com/news/br…17/ breasts.html .)

Interesting link Kaimi. I think it illustrates an interesting point that immodesty is indeed largely defined by culture. We are under no specific covenants to dress modestly but we are under covenant to live the law of chastity. Dressing modestly is an appendage to the law of chastity not a covenant in itself. Our choices about modesty should be guided accordingly it seems.

I do not know, but I personally cannot wait for a sleeveless garment. I mean, come ON…

I second fluffy’s comment. I’m dying to wear tank tops. I even own tank tops. They hang in my closet and gather dust. But they looked so cute!

So can we start the petition for the sleveless G’s or what? I mean they are barely there anyway. Pure ridiculousness

How do you find that stuff, Kaimi?

“they made them more comfortable by making them 2 piece”

That’s completely subjective. I find the opposite to be true; that one-piece garments are more comfortable.

“there have been repeated cycles during which it has been completely acceptable to show a woman’s breast in public”

One can only hope that soon breast bearing will become acceptable once again!

I don’t see a problem with wearing tank tops. As long as you wear a button-up top over it, you can wear them just fine. ^_^

    I miss nice underwear.

I do too in a way, but what I don’t miss are panty lines. ^_^

“How many more changes will take place within the church because of the culture outside the church?”

Hopefully enough changes to allow the church to accept homosexuals.

“Hopefully enough changes to allow the church to accept homosexuals.”

Accept them in what way? Please be more specific. There are ways that the Church does accept homosexuals.

I agree with Geoff. Modesty is a principle to be applied, and not a law to be obeyed. It is important to remember that the Lord accepts the sacrifices of our heart, and not of the neck, sleeve, or hem line.
