Who will be going to the temple in the Millenium?

Don - June 20, 2005

Someone in SS class told us not to plan on doing proxy temple work during the Millenium.  I hadn’t thought of that before, since the big church service during the Millenium will be temple work.  I did some research and according to Joseph Fielding Smith Temple work is a mortal ordainence and can only be done by those in mortality, not by immortal beings.

That being the case it makes a number of interesting scenarios.

If we are mortal then we could meet the immortal person in the temple lobby, get his name, do the proxy work and come out and get a big hug and move on the the next in line.

If we are immortal then we can’t do proxy work.  Since our work has already been done then the question arises…can we do any temple work?  Will we be prohibited from participating.  We can’t do our own endowment again and again, (like re-baptism in the old days)…so what do we do?

And since immortals can’t do proxy work then what do the immortals do once their work has been done for them?  How do they "learn" the signs, tokens etc?  Repetition is how we learn it, what about them?

Oh, one other thing, there are approximately 8,800,000 hrs. during the Millenium.  For round numbers if we cut the endowment to 1 hour, that means for each temple opened 24 hours a day we can do 8.8million endowments.  I don’t know the exact numbers but something like 12+ billion people have lived on the earth so far.  My guess is that 75%+ will accept the gospel (that’s a whole new post), so if I’m right it will take 100 temples just to do the proxy work.  Consider how many will be born during that 1,000 years who will need their work done too!  Wow we really do need more temples, and temple work will be the work of the Millenium.

I’m just sorry that I won’t be able to do any of that work….unless the Millenium hurrys up and gets here before I die.

  1. You know, I just don’t get why Resurected beings can’t perform ordinacne work. Why not?

  2. J.
I don’t know either, except what JFS said. One logical reason is you’d then have immortal beings going around doing their own temple work. If that were the case, then we wouldn’t need to worry so much about doing it for them. Wait a few years, the Millenium starts and they could just do their own.
Then what would the members do during the Millenium?

Because their perfected bodies won’t suffer from acne. (Sorry J. I love little accidents like that.)

On a serious note, does Pres. Smith’s decree preclude the resurrected from serving as officiators and veil workers? That is, might the mortals still be required to serve as proxies, but the immortals staff the temples, perform the ordinances, etc.?

If that’s the case, I bet roast beef night in the temple cafeteria is gonna ROCK!!

  4. Immortal beings have been resurrected. The final judgment has taken place for resurrected beings. If that were not the case, then what type of body would they receive? Terrestrial with an option to upgrade to Celestial? We will be doing work for those who have passed, but have not yet been resurrected; just like we do now.

Who will be doing the temple work? Mortals living on the earth. Children born during the millennium will live until 72 years old, when they will be changed in the twinkling of an eye into resurrected beings. I assume that during the millennium the infant mortality rate and other causes of early death will be much lower, if not eliminated all together. The population should become quite large, even with the massive clearing of the stubble at the beginning of the millennium.

Don’t assume that just because we have only a few more than 100 temples now that there won’t be more later. Temples will dot the earth during the millennium. The temple work will continue day and night.

  5. Floyd,

I don’t assume there will only be 100 temples during the Millenium. Brigham Young said there would be thousands (so that’s at least 2001).

Further motals will die at the age of 100 during the Millenium and when you are resurrected at the begining or during the Millenium to a Celestial body it is not the final judgement. The final judgement comes at the end of the Millenium, after you’ve had a thousand years to work on yourself to become perfect. I agree once you receive your resurrected body you can’t change it in for a better one, but the final judgement comes at the end.

  6. What about all the missionary work for the people who actually have to accept the gosple before the ordinance work can be completed. We will be doing that.

We will already be judged, The morning of the resurrection has already begun, and did so with Christs resurrection. Yes the final judgement does come at the end. But lets hope we do not have to wait for that. It is reserved for those with no reward (see section 76)

Some of us will be at Eternal Institute class working on our own perfection. We have plenty to learn about living like God.

And then yes we will be helping those here on this sphere to continue in this work as well. I think there will be lots to do with a perfected body and no veil.

  7. These numbers seem flawed. Only one endowment per temple per session? I think most temples can accomodate more than a single person at a time. Larger rooms probably have a capacity of 80?

It also seems reasonable that larger temples could be built that would accomodate hundreds of people in a session.

The 24-hr a day part is reasonable but probably not needed. I know that on Fridays the Sao Paulo temple would run non-stop.

Also note that Joseph Smith was able run the endowment in 30 minutes.
