What’s Your Biggest Surprise?

Don - June 8, 2010

We’ve all had surprises, good and bad.

Rusty and his wife Sara just set up one of the best surprises ever! (For those of you who don’t know, Rusty has a beautiful little 2 yr old daughter) My wife and I “Skype” with Rusty and Sara regularly, it’s actually so my wife can get her “Lucca Fix” – she loves seeing and talking to her granddaughter.

Without telling my wife, Sara and Lucca flew out to visit. Sunday after church I told my wife I was going to a meeting. I went to the airport and picked up Sara and Lucca.

When we arrive home I came into the house and we Skyped Rusty. My wife started talking to Rusty (I went out to the car and got Sara and Lucca, we sneaked in behind my wife while she was still talking. She asked Rusty “Where’s Lucca?” Rusty told her to turn around, she didn’t understand so she asked again. Rusty told her to turn around. The expression on my wife’s face was what we all were looking for and planning on! What a wonderful surprise and gift – a week with our granddaughter (and her mom)!

What’s been your biggest surprise…share the joy with us.

  1. That’s really neat. I’d have to ponder it awhile to think of my best surprise.

  3. That’s a great surprise. The best one I can think of was when my wife threw me a surprise birthday party. I was literally so surprised I almost had a heart attack.

  4. I guess mine would have to be the first time God talked to me. I was 17, I was responding emotionally to the “Superstar” musical playing on the turntable, asking the Lord, “Who are you, what have you sacrificed?” And then I got my answer, and then another soon thereafter. And then I became LDS, which was my second biggest surprise. It was the WAY I got my answer– a voice TALKING to me… which thing I never had supposed.

  5. My biggest surprise was learning my wife was pregnant with our fourth child the same day I made the doctor appointment to get snipped.

  6. I don’t know if it was the biggest, but when I saw the Sixth Sense I was ten minutes late. I missed the whole shooting scene in the beginning so I totally did not see that ending coming.

  7. It would have been the surprise party at a favorite restaurant for my wife’s 30th birthday (no telling how long ago that was), except for the fact that the restaurant had moved and I got their address off an old business card and half the guests showed up after we did.

But, a few days before that, I was calling Kathleen, my wife’s friend, to make some last minute arrangements, and went into autopilot as I dialed (their number was the same as ours except for two digits) and called home instead. When my wife answered, I thought she didn’t sound like Kathleen so I said “Hello. Kathleen?” to which she said “What?” And like an idiot I said “Kathleen?” again. To which she responded “Mark, this is your wife!” After that I was laughing so hard I couldn’t talk much anymore and made some lame excuse and that was that. But, what a surprise!

It did make the opening scene of Bonfire of the Vanities particularly hilarious, though.

  9. My husband and I dated for a bit at BYU, and then I broke up with him because I did not want to marry a Mormon. Not long after I broke up with him, someone sent flowers to my entire apartment. There were six women in the apartment and each woman got a $20-$30 bouquet. I honestly did not believe it could have been Paul, because Paul was just as poor as I was and I certainly couldn’t afford $120-$180 on someone who had just broken up with me. Two of the other girls in the apartment were in serious relationships, so I just figured one of their guys did it and was lying about it.

At a later point in time, after Paul and I were dating again, he got me roses. We were having a conversation about this and I said something like, “You’ve only ever gotten me flowers once.” And he said, “No, I got you flowers twice.”

It took me a second for the hamster wheel to turn in my head so that the story clicked. I was shocked. I really hadn’t believed it was him.

It was an awesome surprise though.

  10. So, if he didn’t get credit for the flowers, what made you decide to start dating him again?

  11. My biggest surprise is when Sarah gets pregnant.
