Breaking Mormon News!

Rusty - June 26, 2006

In case anyone missed it, a few brand new things have just come out about Mormonism that I think we should be discussing in the Bloggernacle: Women don’t have the priesthood; our (lay) church leadership screws up sometimes; gay Mormons struggle with their faith; the temple experience isn’t like going to church; sacrament speakers, teachers and testimony bearers sometimes say wacky things; garments aren’t like regular underwear; the First Presidency and Q12 are all old and white; some people don’t like the idea of polygamy; wine can be good for you despite what the Word of Wisdom says; The Book of Mormon isn’t a history textbook; and finally, different people have different experiences in the Church.

Since these things haven’t been discussed before, I would imagine everyone has a lot to say! What do you all think about these issues?

  2. What?!

  3. acutually most studies re: drinking wine are inaccurately reported. It seems when the variable of “non-drinker” is defined in most of these studies, it includes people who used to drink heavily, but don’t drink any more. So the “abstainers” often included people who up until a few months previous, did drink. You can read my economist friends’s post about it here:

Nothing groundbreaking, but something I like to point out to YM & YW when they try to poke holes in the Word of Wisdom. Oh and, yes I got the joke.

  4. You better keep a lid on this, before it starts destroying people’s testimonies.

  5. I can identify!
My wife doesn’t have the priesthood.
My bishop is sometimes a knucklehead.
    Even the non-gays struggle.
I sometimes doze off in the temple (wait..that is like sacrament meeting).
Testimony meeting – alias Health report, vacation report, etc.
Garments are more comfortable (I’m still using one piece).
I am almost an old, white guy.
One spouse is more than enough.
Wine is great. So is smoking, driving without a seatbelt, spittin in the wind…..
We’re supposed to actually read the Book of Mormon????
Just going to church is a different experience.

  6. Slow down there Rusty, I’m trying to take notes.

  7. The heck, you say? And I suppose they don’t serve steak at stakecenters either?

  8. You don’t see it? Pres. Hinckley is half Mongolian, quarter Cossack and two thirds Basque.

  9. Sadly your amusing snark did nothing to slow the deluge of ‘nacle posts on these overcooked subjects. I see there are brand new posts that cover some of these topics even since you posted. We seem to be world class dead-horse-beaters in the bloggernacle at times…

  10. The thing that never ceases to amaze me is how relatively little we discuss the theological subjects that are the bread and butter of gospel discussion in just about any other Christian denomination (grace, justification, sanctification, free will, causation, the causes of good and evil, and so on).

I think they are fascinating, but most here seem to think they are old hat, or there is not much to be said on the subject.

  11. Love it! Reminds me of the old bumper sticker: Nuke the unborn gay whales for C_____!

    Comment by Steve EM — June 27, 2006 @ 6:30 pm

  12. I think part of the reason for duplicate posting is due to the ever-changing readership of the ‘naccle.

I didn’t know it existed a year ago but now faithfully read many of the blogs. I assume there are a fair amount of others in my same position.

While we may not post very often (the first and only time was on Thang- I still think MMP is a crock but I respect your views Geoff and don’t think you’re a complete apostate ;) the collective ‘we’ weren’t around for some of the original horse-beatings.

Just a thought. On a side note- I’ve left the land of the Saints and am now in TX. What type of G’s do most people use in hot, humid areas? (though this is probably a dead horse as well…)

    Amen and amen!

  15. I liked this a whole lot better than any snark I’ve seen in ages.

Jon in Austin, email me and I’ll let you know what I think about hot weather options.

  16. If we had some interesting subjects in the gospel to discuss maybe we would. You obviously listed ALL of the most interesting ones, so what else is there to talk about?
